ABS Sire Analyst Paul Trapp Visits Japan

One of our very own sire analysts, Paul Trapp, had the opportunity to travel to Japan in late March and early April to travel and judge shows.

Paul judged over 560 head while touring Japan, and shows included were the Tochigi Black and White show, Tama Black and White Show, Kanagawa Black and White Show, Chiba Black and White Show, Gunma Black and White Show, and Chugoku Area Black and White Show. The show in Chugoku was the largest attended by exhibitors, with 163 head.

Paul had nothing but good things to say about his time spent in Japan.

“We had several Japanese trainees on our farm when I was a kid and that developed a curiosity about Japan for me at a young age. Early in my ABS career I was able to give several daughter and farm tours to the folks at JLT. This increased my desire to learn more about Japan. I was always impressed by the cow knowledge and the desire to learn more from each Japanese visitor I encountered.  In short it has been a lifelong goal of mine to visit Japan.”

“When the opportunity came up last year to judge in Japan it did not take me long to say yes! Due to the unfortunate problems in Japan last year my trip was delayed until 2012, but it was certainly worth the wait. It also gave me more time to practice eating with chop sticks! In judging the five shows near Tokyo I was very impressed by the quality of cattle, how the animals were prepared and the thirst for advice on how to improve.”

“On my second trip I traveled to the southern part of Japan for a regional show in one of the best dairy production areas in Japan. Again, I had the same outcome – wonderful cows and great people. The hospitality was wonderful on both trips. I had two excellent guides that are super guys and great assets to the ABS Team. Yohei did all my translating in the ring and along the way. I really enjoyed the food, scenery and the couple of tourist stops along our travels. Most of all, I will remember the friendships that I made on my trips.”

“One last thought, my wife asked what my impression of Japan was. I told her that if we can raise our two boys to be as respectful as the people I met on my trip to Japan, then we would have done a good job as parents,” Paul concluded.
